Texas Bob Eats

"RR Starr Restaurant"
Concan, Texas (sort of)

S

ometimes you find a place by accident. We were headed back to Garner State Park and we needed to be there by 1:00 pm so we could hear a Park Ranger talk us all about the trees in the Frio River valley. The only problem was we needed to eat lunch first and we hoped to find a place relatively close to the park. Fortunately we ran across the RR Starr Restaurant located about two miles south of the entrance of park on US 83.

The Restaurant is in a large steel building. The interior was decorated in what I would call "post modern" plywood with a touch of waffle board in the ceiling panels.  The real touch that I enjoyed was the television perpetually turned to the Western Channel.  It was just like when I was kid eating in front of the TV watching Roy Rogers chase down bad guys in an old convertible with Trigger the wonder horse.  But we weren't there for the architecture or design we were there to eat.

I

don’t really remember if I looked at the menu or if I just ordered off the list of food on the board behind the casher, but I do remember that I ordered a cheeseburger with fries and a diet Dr Pepper.

Our “wait staff” was a cowboy, he really was.  The cook looked like the cook in the Beetle Bailey comic strip.  (You young folks will just have to let that description slide by.)  About ten minutes into Roy Rogers, our burgers showed up.  The reason I can't share a picture of them with you is because we ate them.  They were good.  The place was clean. What else do you really need to know.  My kind of place.
