Born on March 2, 1793,Sam Houston was a natural born leader. He left his family farm in Tennessee to live with the Cherokee Indians. He fought in U.S. Army against Great Britain. He served both as a representative and governor of Virginia. He helped write and sign the Texas Declaration of Independence and the constitution for the Republic of Texas. He lead the Texian army and ultimately won the battle which decided the outcome to the fight for independence from Mexico. He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas. The city of Houston was named in honor of him. When Texas became a state he was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving from 1846-1859. Sam Houston was truly a Great American.
