Senator Benton's first Texas-New Mexico boundary proposal (1850).
"We cannot protect New Mexico," he said, "we cannot go to her, or to California, upon any direct line, or upon
any line within the United States south of 42°, without going through the State of Texas." In exchange for
ceding 200,000 square miles, Senator Benton proposed, Texas would be paid $15 million.15
